Goechala Trek

Goechala Trek
Duration 10 Days / 9 Nights
Location Yuksom
Group Size 2–12 People
Difficulty Hard
Starting From ₹22000 Per person

The Goechala Trek is Sikkim’s most famous high-altitude trek. It gives you one of the best views of Mount Kanchenjunga in the whole Himalayas. Kanchenjunga stands 8,586 metres tall, the third-highest peak on Earth. On this trek, you get close enough to watch the first light of sunrise hit its face, from Goechala Viewpoint 1 at 4,600 metres.

This 10-day trek starts and ends at New Jalpaiguri. It runs through Yuksom, the old first capital of Sikkim, and deep into Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trail climbs through green forest, rhododendron groves, and open alpine meadows. Along the way, you pass Dzongri, Thansing, and Samiti Lake.

For the full breakdown of transport options, timings, and road conditions on the way in, see our guide on how to reach Yuksom.

The Goechala Trek is graded moderate to difficult. It needs solid fitness and one full rest day at Dzongri to adjust to the altitude. In return, it gives you forest, glacier, alpine lake, and a wide mountain view that few treks in India can match.

Trip Highlights

  • Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Goechala Viewpoint 1 at 4,600 m

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1 Day

NJP / Bagdogra to Yuksom (1,780 m)

Your Goechala Trek starts with a drive from New Jalpaiguri or Bagdogra to Yuksom, the old first capital of Sikkim. The road climbs through tea gardens and small hill villages. You reach Yuksom by evening. This is the last spot with a steady mobile network. It is also where your forest permits get checked. You stay the night in a hotel or homestay.

2 Day

Yuksom to Sachen (2,200 m)

The trek begins with an easy climb through thick forest. You cross bridges over the Pha Khola and Tshushay Khola rivers. The path runs past oak, maple, and chestnut trees. You reach Sachen, a forest camp that lets your body settle into tent life.

3 Day

Sachen to Tshoka (2,950 m)

This is a steep, tough day. The trail climbs in switchbacks, with wooden steps cut into the hillside. You pass the small hamlet of Bakhim on the way. At Tshoka, the thick forest opens up into rhododendron groves. You get your first view of Mount Pandim, next to a small monastery and a quiet pond.

4 Day

Tshoka to Dzongri (4,000 m)

The trail climbs through open alpine ground. You pass Phedang, a rest point at 3,650 metres. Then you reach Dzongri, a windswept meadow high above the treeline. This is the hardest day so far. You gain over a thousand metres of height in a single push.

5 Day

Rest Day at Dzongri, with Dzongri Top Sunrise (4,200 m)

This is a fixed rest day. Your body needs it to adjust to the thin air. Most trekkers wake before dawn and climb to Dzongri Top for sunrise views over the Kanchenjunga and Singalila ranges. Then you walk back down to Dzongri to sleep at the lower height. This climb high, sleep low pattern is key to a safe trek ahead.

6 Day

Dzongri to Thansing (3,800 m)

The trail drops in height today. You walk down through the Kokchurung meadows and follow the Prek Chu River into Thansing, a wide open valley below Mount Pandim.

7 Day

Thansing to Lamuney (4,200 m)

A short walk brings you to Lamuney, the last camp before the summit push. The land turns rocky and bare at this height. You rest early, since tomorrow starts well before sunrise.

8 Day

Lamuney to Goechala Viewpoint 1 (4,600 m) and Down to Kokchurung

Summit day starts between 1 AM and 3 AM. You walk by headlamp across rocky glacier ground, past the still waters of Samiti Lake at 4,300 metres. You reach Goechala Viewpoint 1 in time to see sunrise light hit Kanchenjunga. This is as far as the trek legally goes today. The old Goecha La pass sits higher, near 4,940 metres, but the Sikkim forest department closed that stretch to protect the snow leopard's habitat. After sunrise, you head back down fast, through Lamuney, all the way to Kokchurung for the night.

9 Day

Kokchurung to Tshoka

You take an alternate forest trail via Phedang on the way back. This skips the climb up to Dzongri and gets you down to the treeline at Tshoka faster.

10 Day

Tshoka to Yuksom, Drive to NJP / Bagdogra

Your last trekking day runs downhill through Bakhim and Sachen, back to Yuksom. From here, a car takes you to New Jalpaiguri or Bagdogra. Your Goechala Trek ends here.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Goechala Trek is graded moderate to difficult. It suits trekkers who have some high-altitude experience or good base fitness. The steep climb from Tshoka to Dzongri and the summit push to Goechala Viewpoint 1 are the toughest parts.

The trek reaches Goechala Viewpoint 1 at 4,600 metres. The old Goecha La pass sits higher, near 4,940 metres. But trekking past Viewpoint 1 is no longer allowed. The area is now protected for snow leopards.

Spring, from March to May, is a great time. Rhododendrons bloom along the trail. Autumn, from September to December, is also ideal, with clear skies and full views of Kanchenjunga. We avoid the monsoon months, from June to August, due to landslides and low visibility.

This package runs for 10 days, from NJP or Bagdogra and back. The trek itself covers about 8 days on the trail, including one fixed rest day at Dzongri.

Indian nationals need a forest permit and basic ID checks, arranged at Yuksom. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit and park entry clearance, and usually need at least two people in the group. We handle all permit paperwork for trekkers who book with us.

We do not recommend this as your first trek. It involves long walks above 4,000 metres. You need prior trekking experience or a strong fitness routine, ideally starting six to eight weeks before you leave.

Solo trekking is not allowed in this region. Sikkim forest rules require every trekker to join a registered local operator, with a certified guide, as part of a group.

Pack sturdy trekking boots with ankle support, warm layered clothing, a sleeping bag rated to minus 10 degrees Celsius, a headlamp, and a basic medical kit with Diamox and an oximeter. We share a full packing list after you book.
