Over seven relaxed days, you will watch sunrise break over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, ride the 140-year-old UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to Ghoom, walk past red pandas and snow leopards at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, taste fresh tea straight from the factory floor at a heritage estate, and cross toward the Nepal border for an afternoon by Mirik Lake. Every day is mapped around real opening hours and weekly closures, so you never arrive at a shut gate.

Best time to travel: March to mid-June, and again October to mid-December, when the air stays clear and Kanchenjunga shows itself most mornings. We do not recommend this package during the monsoon (June to September). Heavy rain regularly triggers landslides and temporary road and site closures across the Darjeeling hills, so sightseeing plans in this window carry real risk of last-minute changes.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1 Day

Arrival & Chowrasta Evening

Our representative receives you at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). The drive up to Darjeeling takes about 3 to 3.5 hours by private vehicle, climbing from the plains to 2,042 metres. After check-in and a short rest to let your body adjust to the altitude, take a gentle evening walk around Chowrasta and Mall Road, Darjeeling's pedestrian-only square. Browse local shops, take in the colonial buildings, and settle in over dinner.

2 Day

Tiger Hill Sunrise, Batasia Loop & the Zoo

An early 4:00 AM start takes you to Tiger Hill, 2,590 metres above sea level, for sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range. Please note: access depends on a daily police coupon system and clear weather, so this leg cannot be guaranteed and may occasionally be swapped for Observatory Hill or Batasia Loop instead. On the way down, stop at Batasia Loop, where the toy train tracks spiral around a war memorial garden, then visit Yiga Choeling Monastery at Ghoom, home to a 15-foot statue of the Maitreya Buddha. After breakfast and rest, spend the afternoon at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the adjoining Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, where you can see red pandas, snow leopards, and original Everest expedition gear. This park is closed every Thursday, so we avoid scheduling this day on one.

3 Day

The Toy Train & Tea Estate Trail

Board the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway for the classic Darjeeling to Ghoom joyride, a two-hour round trip with a stop at Batasia Loop and the Ghoom Railway Museum. After lunch in town, visit Happy Valley Tea Estate for a guided factory walkthrough covering withering, rolling, and drying, finished with a tasting session. In the late afternoon, stop at the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, established in 1959, where artisans still weave carpets and carve woodwork by hand, an excellent spot for an authentic souvenir. Both the tea estate and the centre are usually closed on Sundays.

4 Day

Temples, Pagoda & Rock Garden

Start with an easy uphill walk to Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple, where Hindu priests and Buddhist monks perform their rituals side by side under a canopy of prayer flags. Continue to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, built in 1992, for a quiet half hour among its four Buddha statues. In the afternoon, descend into the valley to the terraced Rock Garden (Barbotey) and Ganga Maya Park, where waterfalls cut through the hillside and the drive down offers some of the best valley views of the trip.

5 Day

Mirik Lake & the Indo-Nepal Border

Today is a full-day excursion away from the Darjeeling ridge. Drive around two hours to Pashupati Market, right on the Indo-Nepal border, where you can walk across into Nepal for an hour of shopping (Indian nationals need a valid photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, or passport). By early afternoon, reach Sumendu Lake, better known as Mirik Lake, ringed by pine forest on one side and manicured gardens on the other, with a boat ride or a walk across its arched footbridge. The drive back passes through Simana viewpoint and several photogenic tea gardens.

6 Day

Ropeway Morning & Free Leisure

Head out early, by 9:30 AM, to the Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway for a 40-minute cable car ride over the Tukvar tea estate and the river valley below. Arriving before the 10:00 AM opening helps you skip the longest queues. The rest of the day is left open for independent exploring: shopping for first-flush tea, Pashmina shawls, or Tibetan thangkas along Nehru Road, or simply café-hopping at Darjeeling institutions like Keventer's or Glenary's. Round off the evening with a farewell dinner.

7 Day

Departure

Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast and one last stroll around the Mall before checking out. Depending on your onward flight or train, we transfer you back to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP), a scenic 3 to 3.5-hour descent that brings your Darjeeling sightseeing tour to a close.

Is this a trekking tour?

No. This is a fully vehicle-based sightseeing package. There is some walking on paved, sloped paths, at Chowrasta, inside the Zoo, and up to the Mahakal Temple, but no trekking gear or hiking fitness is required.

Is the Tiger Hill sunrise guaranteed?

We schedule it for Day 2 morning, but access depends on a daily police coupon system that allows a limited number of vehicles up each day, along with clear weather. On the rare days when coupons run out or local transport unions call a strike, we substitute Observatory Hill or Batasia Loop as an alternative sunrise point.

Can we travel during the monsoon (June to September)?

We strongly advise against it. Heavy monsoon rain regularly triggers landslides across the Darjeeling hills, and in past seasons this has closed roads and shut down sites like Tiger Hill and the Rock Garden for days at a time. If your travel dates fall in this window, we build in flexible buffer time and track local weather advisories closely, but some last-minute changes to the plan should be expected.

Do we need any permits?

Indian citizens need no permit for Darjeeling town or its main sightseeing spots. If your itinerary includes the border crossing near Mirik, carry a valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, or passport. Foreign nationals only need a standard Indian tourist visa.

Which sightseeing spots are closed on certain days?

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute close every Thursday. Happy Valley Tea Estate and the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre are usually closed on Sundays. Our itinerary is sequenced around these closures, but if your exact travel dates shift, tell us in advance so we can re-order the days.

Should we pick the steam or diesel toy train?

Both run the same two-hour Darjeeling to Ghoom joyride. The steam engine is the more nostalgic, photogenic option and costs more; the diesel engine is a comfortable and slightly cheaper alternative. Either way, book early. Seats fill up fast in peak season.

What should we pack?

Pack in layers. A light jacket covers spring and summer evenings, while autumn and winter call for heavy woollens, a thermal layer, and gloves, especially for the pre-dawn Tiger Hill trip. Comfortable, grippy walking shoes are essential year-round on Darjeeling's steep, often damp lanes.
